Project Background
Between March and May 2025, BOWO Electric supported the enclosure requirements for an underground parking garage within a mixed-use commercial complex in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The installation covered lighting branch connections, local electrical protection points, and damp service areas across the basement parking levels.
The main challenge was not simply humidity. Conditions changed noticeably from one part of the garage to another. Electrical boxes near the vehicle ramp were more exposed to rainwater carried in by cars, while deeper parking areas remained humid for long periods. Around drainage pipework and service zones, occasional splash and restricted ventilation created additional concerns for cable connections and local electrical components.
The underground garage served both the commercial podium and the occupied sections of the development. Vehicles entered through an external ramp, lighting operated for extended periods, and the ceiling space already carried ventilation ducts, fire-protection pipework, drainage lines, cable trays, and other building services.
This made the enclosure layout more complicated than a standard indoor wiring installation.
At lighting branch points, the contractor needed boxes that could accommodate conductors and terminals without leaving the internal wiring cramped. Near the ramp and damp utility sections, the concern shifted toward moisture exposure, cable-entry sealing, and cover closure. At selected local protection points, DIN-rail devices also required enclosed access for inspection and maintenance.
The project team therefore reviewed the garage by installation zone rather than specifying one enclosure type for every location.
What the Contractor Found on Site
Moisture Exposure Was Highest Near the Vehicle Ramp
The entrance ramp formed the transition between Kuala Lumpur’s outdoor conditions and the first basement level. During wet weather, vehicles carried water down the ramp, and the electrical installation closest to the opening faced a different environment from connections located farther inside the garage.
For these positions, box location and cable-entry direction were reviewed together. The contractor wanted to avoid placing cable entries where runoff, splash, or moisture tracking could reach the enclosure opening unnecessarily.
Lighting Branch Points Had Different Space Requirements
The parking aisles used repeated ceiling-mounted lighting runs, but the branch points were not identical. Some contained relatively simple cable connections; others required more room for multiple conductors and terminals.
Using the smallest possible box at every branch point would have made installation and later inspection unnecessarily difficult. Internal wiring space therefore became part of the selection process rather than an afterthought.
Ceiling Services Restricted Installation Positions
Several potential mounting locations were close to ducts, sprinkler lines, drainage pipes, or cable trays. A box could fit physically and still be inconvenient to service once the surrounding systems were completed.
The contractor checked whether enclosure covers could still be opened and whether cable entries remained accessible after nearby building services were in place.
Damp Utility Areas Needed a Different Approach
Connections near drainage-related services and enclosed utility sections were exposed to more persistent moisture than those in the central parking aisles.
These locations were reviewed separately, with greater attention to enclosure sealing, mounting position, cable entry, and the level of environmental protection required.
The Contractor’s Main Requirements
After reviewing the installation conditions, the contractor defined several practical requirements for the enclosure package:
- Different enclosure sizes for different conductor and terminal arrangements
- Protection against dust, humidity, condensation, and occasional splash
- Secure cable entry appropriate to the actual cable routing
- Enough internal room for wiring without excessive bending
- Accessible covers for inspection and maintenance
- Suitable options for lighting connections and local DIN-rail protection
- A consistent enclosure approach across different basement zones
The specification was therefore based on where each box would be installed and what it needed to contain, rather than on a single blanket requirement for the entire garage.

Waterproof Junction Boxes for Lighting Branch Connections
For selected lighting branch points, the project used waterproof junction-box configurations sized around the actual conductor arrangement and available ceiling space.

Selection was not based on the IP rating alone. The team also considered:
- Number of conductors entering the box
- Terminal space
- Cable bending radius
- Entry direction
- Available mounting surface
- Access to the cover after installation
This prevented a common site problem: installing a sealed enclosure that is technically suitable for the environment but too small or awkward for practical wiring.
Hinged Enclosures for Locations Requiring Easier Access
Some electrical points required more convenient access than a compact screw-cover box could provide. In these positions, a larger hinged enclosure format was a more practical choice.
BOWO’s IP66 hinged waterproof junction box configuration was relevant where additional internal space and easier opening were required for electrical connections or components.
The hinged format also reduced the need to fully remove the cover during service work, which was useful in crowded ceiling areas where technicians had limited working space.
Local Distribution Protection for DIN-Rail Devices
At selected local protection points, the contractor needed enclosed space for DIN-rail devices rather than a standard cable junction.
For these positions, BOWO’s IP65 waterproof electrical distribution box provided a more suitable format for circuit breakers and other DIN-rail-mounted components.
The transparent cover also allowed basic visual inspection of internal devices without opening the enclosure during routine checks.
As with the junction boxes, the distribution enclosure was selected according to circuit quantity, internal component dimensions, cable routing, and the actual mounting position.
Key Installation Decisions
Most of the practical work on this project came down to a small number of installation decisions. These had a greater effect on the finished result than simply choosing one box with a high protection rating.
1. Box Size Was Matched to the Actual Wiring
The contractor avoided using one enclosure size throughout the garage. Smaller lighting connections and more crowded branch points were treated differently.
Where several conductors entered the same box, additional internal room was retained so terminals could be positioned cleanly and wiring remained accessible for future inspection.
2. Cable Entries Were Reviewed Before Installation
Cable-entry direction was checked against the actual mounting surface and nearby services. Where practical, entries were arranged to reduce direct exposure to moisture and to avoid unnecessarily tight cable bends.
The cable outside diameter and entry component also had to be compatible. A sealed box could not compensate for a poorly matched cable entry.
3. Maintenance Access Was Preserved
Before final mounting, the team checked that covers could still be opened after adjacent pipework, ventilation services, and cable trays were installed.
This was particularly important above parking aisles, where the ceiling space was already heavily occupied. A slightly different mounting position often provided better long-term access without changing the electrical function of the connection point.
Project Result
By the end of the installation period in May 2025, the contractor had a clearer enclosure arrangement for the different electrical conditions across the underground garage.
Standard lighting branch points were separated from higher-exposure locations near the ramp and damp service areas. Larger or more accessible enclosures were used where internal space and maintenance access mattered, while local DIN-rail protection points were handled with a dedicated distribution-box format.
The final arrangement gave the installation team a consistent way to address four recurring site issues:
- Different moisture exposure between parking zones
- Variation in conductor and terminal space requirements
- Restricted mounting positions around ceiling services
- Future access for inspection and maintenance
No single enclosure type was expected to solve every condition in the garage. The project worked because the box format, internal space, cable entry, and mounting position were considered together.
Practical Lessons from the Project
This Kuala Lumpur installation reinforced a point that is easy to overlook in basement electrical work: an underground parking garage is not one uniform environment.
The entrance ramp, central parking aisles, drainage zones, and enclosed service areas can expose electrical connections to different levels of humidity, dust, condensation, and splash. Applying the same enclosure specification everywhere may simplify the purchase order, but it does not necessarily produce the best installation.

- Required internal terminal or component space
